The highest town in the East
Beech Mountain sits higher than any other town east of the Mississippi, so summers here average seventy degrees and winter brings lovely snow. Deer Trail Lodge is a well cared for, cozy log cabin not far from the middle of town, between two creeks, and just two miles from the ski lifts.
By the numbers
Many guests find themselves drawn back to Deer Trail Lodge: a place where sparkling cleanliness and attentive upkeep are constants, and the gentle sounds of nearby creeks set the pace of the day. Its proximity to year-round outdoor pursuits and the comfort of a truly cared-for cabin invite return visits season after season for the same magical experience.
Winter
The resort is two miles away, the town sledding hill is up the road (the sleds are in the house), and there are boot and glove dryers for when you come in.
Inside
Early mornings settle softly by the fireplace, where the first light drifts through tall windows and the scent of fresh coffee lingers. After a day on the slopes, gather in gentle warmth—stories and laughter shared as the fire glows, the quiet of the mountains just beyond the glass.

From the owners
In more than thirty years of travelling we rented dozens of homes on Vrbo and Airbnb, and found very few we would have rented twice. We carried our own pillows, our own dog crate and boxes of cookware. Not one of those houses had a crockpot, a waffle maker or a crate. Windows had no blinds, neighbours kept us awake, doors didn’t latch, and every house lacked the attention of an owner who actually stayed there.
So when we closed on Deer Trail Lodge in July 2021, we set out to make it the house we had been looking for: comfortable beds, clean from floor to ceiling, a kitchen with everything in it, room-darkening blinds, gas fireplaces, central air for the rare warm day, a yard where a dog can run, and a creek on either side. We have spent hours cleaning, remodelling and reworking every corner of it. Most importantly, we stay here ourselves.
If anything is amiss while you are here, call, text or email and we will see to it straight away. We love this place, and we hope you will too.

We closed on the home the first week of July 2021, and in our very first week there we discovered that deer were literally everywhere. They were not shy and would graze right in fr

Not far from the home is a lovely overlook and a moderately strenuous half-mile trail that begins with a picnic area and a waterfall.

We found so many lovely trails just minutes from the home. This is Upper Pond Creek Trail.
The alpine coaster in Banner Elk was a lot of fun. We filmed a full ride; you can watch it on the Beech Mountain page.
This was sent to us by one of our guests, Tanya, during a family outing. When you are a hungry fawn, it does not matter that the world must stop for you!
For the second time this week, a black bear wandered across the property at Deer Trail Lodge, down by the creek. Please use the bear-proof bin at the street.

I have recently taken an interest in frisbee golf. We tried the course at the ski resort a few years ago but found the grass too high at times and hard to navigate, so I was happy
